Dyett & Bhatia (www.dyettandbhatia.com) is a 20+ person urban planning firm, with a focus on preparing long-range plans for cities, and an award-winning portfolio of work. We are located in the heart of vibrant downtown Oakland, directly adjacent to the 12th Street BART Station.
We are looking to fill several full-time positions on a team of highly skilled professionals dedicated to preparing cutting-edge plans for cities across California and beyond. Current assignments include a range of general, community, and specific plans; downtown plans; corridor plans; station area plans; zoning; and policy studies. We are hiring for the following three positions:

Senior/Principal Planner (Zoning)
Dyett & Bhatia has a national practice preparing zoning regulations. Recent clients include small cities to large ones, such as Portland (OR) and San Diego. We are looking for a planner with significant experience in code writing to be part of our dynamic team, and potentially assume firm-wide leadership for zoning. This is a unique opportunity for someone with demonstrated prior experience in code writing and interest in zoning.
The successful candidate will lead and manage zoning assignments, which include comprehensive new citywide regulations or those with a specific focus – such as station areas, downtown, signs, parking, subdivisions, sustainable development or form-based codes. Candidates must enjoy zoning work and have a solid grasp of legal and technical underpinnings of zoning. Experience in administering zoning and development regulations, design expertise, and understanding of built form is desirable. We are interested in candidates with exceptional writing and analytical skills, who can effectively interface with clients and communicate in public settings.
Candidates must possess a Master of City Planning or a JD, with minimum five to seven years’ experience in writing or administering zoning. Additional experience is desirable.
Hiring level is open, and we welcome resumes from candidates with significant experience; salary is unlikely to be a constraint for the right candidate.
We are looking for a talented urban planner to be a team-member on ongoing long-range planning assignments. Position will involve research and analysis; writing reports and plans; and assisting with community outreach and project coordination. Ideal candidates will have exposure to California planning practice and geographic familiarity with the state, prior experience, and background/ability in one or more of the following areas:
- Land use planning
- Environmental planning/CEQA
- Sustainability and climate resiliency
- Housing, urban economics, and data analysis
Candidates must have:
- Graduate degree in planning or closely related field
- Exceptional writing skills
- Strong research, analytical, and organizational skills
- Effective verbal communication skills and an ability to work in teams
Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish is desirable.

Graphic Designer/Urban Planning Project Assistant
This position carries primary responsibility of preparing high quality, polished documents (often several hundred pages long) using InDesign and Microsoft Word for print and digital publication, together with supporting planners on a variety of tasks such as: preparing and managing project websites; preparing graphics, presentations, meeting notes, and short reports; conducting online engagement/meetings; carrying out research assignments; and general project and office organization.
Candidates must have a BA, interest in urban planning, and:
- Strong expertise in InDesign and MS Word; expertise in other Adobe CS software (Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat)
- Excellent editing, grammar, and verbal communication skills. Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Strong graphic design skills including knowledge of page layout, information design, typography, UI design, printing
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with different levels of staff and clients
- Ability to take initiative, “can do” attitude, commitment to meeting deadlines, and attention to detail
- Web design experience
- Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, Squarespace, WIX, SketchUp
- Expertise in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Zoom
