Monterey General Plan and Housing Element Update
Dyett & Bhatia is preparing a targeted General Plan Update for City of Monterey,
focused on the Housing, Safety, and Land Use elements of the General Plan. Monterey
is a charming coastal community with a rich history, a distinctive small-town feel,
and an enviable quality of life. As a built out community, Monterey is faced with the
challenge of accommodating 3,654 new housing units during the upcoming eight-year
housing element cycle, while also taking action to strengthen climate resilience and
improve conditions for its most vulnerable residents. The project will require careful
consideration of new State laws and regulations and a thoughtful strategy for integrating
new housing. Dyett & Bhatia is also leading a robust community involvement strategy
to engage a broad cross section of community members and stakeholders and provide
a forum for traditionally under-represented segments of the population. Community
engagement activities will include bilingual English-Spanish “go-to” outreach at events
and popular locations around town; an interactive map-based survey; and a youth-led
survey on climate adaptation and resilience.
